What You Need To Know Before Nursing School (My Experience)

Would you believe me if I told you that the time awaiting my nursing school acceptance letter was the least stressful in comparison to everything entailed afterwards? Of course you have to take a bajillion prerequisites, have a couple of recommendation letters, and take a placement exam before beginning the application process. In which only to await the admission committee acceptance or rejection of your hard work. The feeling of the “unknown” has been a never ending story through my nursing school journey. But like my grandma told me “ the best part about life is the journey towards your goals”. But what happens between the moment one receives the acceptance letter and the first day of class? Well that depends on the school that one attends.

Similar to my experience, you may receive a checklist on things to complete/buy before the first day of class. The first thing that I had to complete was (drum roll please) immunizations/bloodwork! Depending on the year you were born and the state that you reside in, this task can be easy or it can be long and dreadful. Luckily for me I was born at a certain time in a certain state that required reliable/accurate documentation on all of my immunizations from birth and so on. So I only had to get poke a couple of times compared to my fellow classmates who had several repeat injections. The second task that I had to complete was a background check. And if you’re a high risk, high profile rebel like me that is wanted by the FBI, CIA, FDA, or Batman then you may have some troubles with passing this step. However, if your record is clean, then you should have no issues with this step. But make sure your record remains clean because you’ll need a clean record or a convincing reason for your nursing employer.

The next step, which is probably the most rewarding yet irresponsible step, is buying school supplies. I suggest that before shopping bring a detailed list of the things you will need (usually provided by the program). I brought a descriptive list because when I shop for supplies I always start off focused and strong but as the temptation and curiosity of what I could get marinates in my head, the wants turn into necessities and the necessities become obsolete leading to a bad case of impulsive shopping and next thing you know I have 4 pairs of scrubs, an apple watch, a pocket organizer for my scrub that already has sectioned pockets and a cinnabon.

So why am I telling you (the reader) about my experience in nursing limbo? For the  pre-nursing student, you must understand that the journey never stops. You have to keep pushing yourself until you reach your goal(s). For the student waiting on your application response, go have fun and save up some money so you can buy a cinnabon when the admission committee tells you yes. For the recently accepted student, get all of your stuff done as early as possible. When a problem occurs (notice that I said when) you have enough time to correct it. And for the person that has no interest in pursuing a healthcare related career, thank for reading our struggle and I hope you’re able to relate on your journey of completing your goals while enjoying a nice warm cinnabon.
